IIM CAT exam will be held online from this year

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are India's premier management have been conducting the Common Admission Test (CAT) every year for admission into various courses. The CAT exam score is very useful for the students to get into major professional institutes including IIMs.

Utkal University of Orissa signs deal with CIPET

Utkal University has signed memorandum of understanding with Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET) to start an innovative research station on polymer on its campus.

The MoU between the university and CIPET would help students in faculty exchange, joint tie-ups in inter-research programmes and collaborative funding, development of high-performance polymer blends, composites, polymeric nanocomposites, blends and alloys.

With the help of the institute, the university will help students in various courses. The MoU will help students in getting better education and research in various faculties. The capital of Orissa has become one of the famous education destinations in India.

HCL Tech follows just in time hiring policy

SC ordered Centre to setup anti-ragging website

The Supreme Court of India has asked the central government to set up anti-ragging websites, according to media reports. Recently, there were many ragging reports came to light. Many students lost their life due to ragging.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG), Gopal Subramaniam stated this in the Supreme Court on April 20 as the Raghavan anti-ragging committee's report on Kachroo's death was presented.

The website would be very useful to the students and they can express their views to the authorities. Sometimes, authorities did not take the complaints filed by students over their ragging by senior seriously. Those complaints should be taken seriously by the authorities . They can stop the ragging as well as save life of a student.

Ahluwalia Contracts secures Rs 353cr orders

Civil construction company Ahluwalia Contracts India today said it has received orders amounting to Rs 352.98 crore from different vendors, according to media reports.

In a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange, Ahluwalia Contracts has informed about it receiving the orders worth Rs 352.98 crore for different construction-related works. The company has got orders worth Rs 64.84 crore from Apollo Hospitals Enterprises.

The company has also bagged order worth Rs 27.03 crore from Jindal Stainless for the construction work in Orissa. The company bagged an order for construction of hotels and flats worth Rs 81 crore from Rites Limited in Delhi and another valued Rs 109.47 crore from Bangalore Metro Rail Corp for construction works at Orissa. Shares of Ahluwalia Contracts hit its upper circuit at Rs Rs 48.95, up 4.93 per cent on the BSE.

DoT holds back extra spectrum to Airtel, to seek legal view

The Government has held back allocating additional spectrum to Bharti Airtel in Orissa, in view of the telecom tribunal's recent judgment that GSM operators have no vested right to get airwaves beyond 6.2 MHz, according to ET report.

After the verification, the Department of Telecom (DoT) said that "Bharti met the eligibility criteria and hence (is) eligible for 7.2 MHz GSM spectrum in the entire service area (Orissa)". Bharti had demanded additional spectrum based on the criteria announced by the DoT in January last year.

Nalco mines may resume operations on April 19

A crack bomb disposal squad of the Orissa state police arrived at Nalco’s Damanjodi mines on Friday to scan the area following last Sunday’s daring Maoist attack.

Nalco, which produces nearly 4.8 million tonnes of bauxite annually, now hopes to start operations at its mines only on Sunday, if the bomb squad completes its job on Saturday and declares the mines area ‘safe’.

The companies aims to bring back the confidence level of its employees those were on scare due to such incidents. The Naxal problem causes huge loss to the state and the interest of the employee should be protected by the government. The security measures to be strengthen in the state following the incidents.

Bhushan Steel gets nod to go ahead with open offer for Orissa Sponge

The Securities and Exchange Board of India allowed Bhusan Steel for open offer for the Orissa Sponge Iron and Steel, according to media reports. The fight of ownership of Orissa Sponge Iron & Stell in legal discuptes.

The company Bhusan Steel has welcomed the Sebi’s view over the takeover regulations and it got nod of Sebi for the open offer. However Sebi also maintained that it will conduct an investigation into the alleged violation of takeover rules by Bhushan Steel as alleged by Orissa Sponge. B

Bhushan Steel ups Orissa plant capacity

The Delhi-based Bhushan Steel has increased the production capacity of its integrated steel plant in Orissa five times to 2.5 million tonnes. The plant, which mainly produces hot rolled coils (HRC), will operate at the enhanced capacity from September this year, according to media reports.

The company has been investing Rs 7,000 crore to boost the plant capacity by 2 million tonnes. Bhushan Steel plans to increase the Orissa plant's capacity to 5 million tonnes and this would be achieved by 2012. For this the company plans to invest Rs 8,000 crores. A 450-mw power plant has also been set up to meet captive power requirements.

Arcelor-Mittal to delay India steel projects

Arcelor-Mittal to delay their proposed steel projects in Orissa, Jharkhand by two years, according to media reports. The Indian head of Arcelor- Mittal told media over this on Wednesday.

The company is proposed to set up steel units in these states and those projects estimated at $ 20-25 billion. It is the impact of the global slowdown on the projects in India.

The group, led by India-born, London-based L.N. Mittal, had earlier proposed the groundbreaking for the two projects, each with the overall capacity of 12 million tonnes of steel per annum, by end-2009 and production by 2014, the media reports quote.

Centre plans to set up two Ultra Mega Power Plants in Orissa

The Centre is planning to set up two new Ultra Mega Power Plants (UMPPs) in Orissa, according to media reports.

These proposed UMPPs would be set up in the coastal belt of the state. Each plant will have generating capacity of 4,000 MW. The water from the sea will be used to generate power from these units.

Though the locations have not been finalised, while five possible locations have been short listed for the purpose by the government. The sort listed places are Kirtania in Balasore district, Dhamara in Bhadrakh district, Paradeep in Jagatsinghpur district, Astharanga in Puri district and Ganja in Ganjam district.

Orissa gets record development aid for projects

NABARD has provided aid of Rs 2,043 crore to Orissa during 2008-09, which is more than 68 per cent over the allocations made previous year, according media reports.

Disbursement of short-term loan to various banks has increased from Rs 625 crore during 2007-08 to Rs 1,258 crore during 2008-09. The State Cooperative Bank (OSCB) availed Rs 1,205 crore short-term loan registering 106 per cent growth.

Refinance was provided for capital formation in agriculture and allied sectors, non-farm sector activities and for investment in the services sector to commercial banks, RRBs and cooperative banks to the tune of Rs 411 crore.

HC stays govt English-medium school fee hike circular

The government in its March 27 circular had also allowed the English medium schools' authorities, to increase their development fees by 15 per cent. The High court hearing over this stayed the operation of the government circular, according to media reports.

A single judge of Justice M M Das yesterday stayed the operation of the government circular and issued notice to the opposite parties to file their counters with in seven days.

The parents' association of a Cuttack-based schools challenged the decision of the state government over this. The next hearing would be held on May 4.

Arcelor-Mittal plans captive port in Orissa

Arcelor-Mittal, the largest steelmaker of the world, plans to set up a captive port at Barunei Muhan, located to the north of Mahanadi river near Paradip in Orissa, according to media reports.

The steelmaker will use the post to import raw materials and export finished products of the company's proposed integrated mega steel plants in Orissa and Jharkhand. The company has made a presentation on the port project before the Orissa Chief Secretary Ajit Kumar Tripathy on Friday.

The company has proposed to construct a double-lane rail line to connect the port with the Paradeep-Haridaspur main line and four-lane road will be constructed to connect the port with the National Highway No 5.

PNB Orissa circle business up 49.37%

The Orissa circle of Punjab National Bank (PNB) has recorded a turnover of Rs 3,240 crore in 2008-09, a 49.37 per cent rise over Rs 2,169 crore achieved by the bank in 2007-08, according to media reports.

PNB made a profit of Rs 56 crore for 2008-09 against the target of Rs 52 crore in Orissa. The bank has proposed to open six more branched in the state by June this year. The bank has achieved its target in Orissa.

The bank would give emphasizing on disbursement of advances to sectors like agriculture and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The bank has provided Rs 175 crore to the agriculture sector and Rs 275 crore to the SMEs in 2007-08. The bank has proposed to open its branches at Aska in Ganjam district, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Banei, Kendrapara and Nayagarh.

HC stays PG medical admissions

The Orissa High Court today stayed the counselling for the in-service PG admissions, according to media reports. The counselling was scheduled to be held on April 13. Justice MM Das hearing a writ petition over the existing norms, has stayed the counselling posting the case to April 20.

As per the existing norms, doctors who have three-year rural stint are given a 10 percent additional weightage on their entrance score. The existing norms are challenged in High Court by Dr Goutam Patnaik, Subhasis Mohapatra and others in separate writ petitions.

JSL to raise Rs 500 cr to part fund Orissa project

Ratan Jindal-led JSL (formerly known as Jindal Stainless), the country's largest stainless steel producer, on Wednesday said it will raise up to Rs 500 crore to part fund the second phase of its Rs 5,700-crore Orissa project, according to media reports.

The company has proposed for 1.6-MTPA stainless steel plant in Orissa. The board of the company informed BSE on April 6 that it’s considering issuing securities on rights basis to raise funds.

The board of directors shall also consider issuing equity shares to qualified institutional buyers through qualified institutional placement and raising money through international offerings by way of issue of FCCBS and GDRs.

The company sources say that the company has raised about Rs 4,400-4,500 crore debt and Rs 5,700 crore required for the second phase of the proposed project.

Idea launches GSM mobile services in Orissa

IDEA Cellular, part of the Aditya Birla Group, on Wednesday launched its GSM mobile services in Orissa. Idea will offer world class facilities covering over 2,200 towns and villages in across the nation.

Now Orissa people will have the services provided by the Idea Cellular. The company Idea would introduce its complete range of affordable and innovative mobile telephony products and services for over 39 million people in the state.

The Chief Marketing Officer Pradeep Shrivastava told media that IDEA would invest Rs 1,000 crore in the next three years in Orissa. The operator now covers over 80 per cent of the telephony potential of the country and is the third largest private GSM player with over 41 million subscribers across 15 telecom circles.

Fewer Indians applying for studies in US: Survey

The Council of Graduate Schools has conducted a servery foreign students admission into various colleges in US for graduate programmes. According to the survey, the number of application by Indian and South Korean for the fall admission have fallen.

The report also suggests that there is rise in applications filed by students from China and Middle East. Applications from India and South Korea fell nine percent and seven percent, respectively, the survey noted,

While according to some media reports, New Zealand has attracting Indian students. In the strength of Indian students in New Zealand in 2005 was only 2000. The number of Indian students have rose to 6000 in 2009.

KIIT receives record 1.3 lakh applications, KITTE 2009 exam to be held on May 17

The KIIT Group of Institutes has received highest applications for the professional programmes for the new academic session. According to the institute sources it has received around 1.3 lakh applications.

No foreign placement for IIM Calcutta students this year

There is huge impact of global slowdown on the placements in Indian Institute of Management (IIM) - one of the premier institutes of India. This year no single student of the post graduate programme for executives at IIM Calcutta (IIM-C) has got overseas placement.

During the placement session last year, six students got international jobs that averaged an annual pay of $120,750, while the highest offer came at $200,000 a year. This year might be the worse year for the graduates from such premier institutes.

This year going to be very tough for the students as the impact of the global slowdown is high on the job market. Foreign companies have been recruiting students form IIM-C but this year the no student got the international job offers.

KIIT university of Orissa inks MoU with two Thailand Universities

Kalinga Institute of Industrial technology (KIIT) University has inked Memorandum of Understanding with two foreign universities - University of Thailand Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and Chiang Mai Rajabhat University.

AIT and Chiang Mai Rajabhat University are the leading universities of Thailand. The MoU was singed in Bangkok on Thursday. The objectives of signing the MoU is to accomplish and develop academic, scientific technical and cultural relationship between these organizations to be effective in management level courses, research programme and in the areas of other common disciplines.

KIIT students would be benefited out of this, as the foreign universities would provide staffs and conduct students exchange programme in specific curriculum areas. The MoU will help students of higher studies and research of all these three universities.

Orissa Govt. plans two food parks in Gajapati and Ganjam

The state government is planning to set up two mega food parks to facilitate vegetable and fruit processing in south orissa. The state government has estimated an investment of Rs 200 for these two food parks.

The two district Ganjam and Gajapati are selected to set up the proposed food park. However, the clearance from the concerned department of central government is awaited. It is reported that the central government would share 50 per cent of the total investment.

The food parks - food processing units will be very useful for the state economy and the farmers. The proposed food parks will offer marketing avenues for different agricultural and horticultural products from the farmers after these products are scientifically processed.

Now, IIM-L goes for fee hike

The Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (IIM-L) hikes fees for its two-year flagship post-graduate program in management, according to media reports.

The IIM-L has raised the fees by Rs. 1.5 lakh per annum from the 2009-10 academic session. Earlier, IIM Calcutta, IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore had raised the fees. The global financial crisis has impact of the IIM placements but the top management institutes of India raised the fees.

The IIM-L director Dr Devi Singh told media that the institute has raised the fees to Rs 4 lakh per annum from the existing fees of Rs. 2.5 per cent. Now students need to pay more the flagship program offered by IIM-L.

Record generation at NTPC Talcher

National Thermal Power Corporation(NTPC) Talcher Thermal has recorded the highest ever annual generation in the last financial year by achieving 3734.74 Million Units (MU) with 92.68 per cent plant load factor (PLF), according to media reports.

NTPC Talcher unit has come one of the most top ten performers in India. Due to the high generation recorded this year, the unit has become first unit in the eastern region for the performance.

The NTPC Talcher unit was started in the year 1968, but the generation of 3734.74 Million Units (MU) is achieved for the first time. The company sources say that March 2009 has recorded the highest monthly generation.

Will one year MBA programme be recognized?

MBA in one year span sound good but it is no clear whether it is recognized or not. While most of aspirants would prefer shortest term courses along with recognition.

In England, the one year MBA is recognized and in India it still need to be recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). According to some media reports, the AICTE may amend its regulations in order to give recognition to one year MBA programme.

There are many institutes in India have been imparting one year MBA programme. As per guidelines released by AICTE, for two years MBA Course, its obligatory for B- Schools to provide a minimum of 1,050 to 1,200 hours of classroom teaching.

In the case of one year MBA, the duration of the classes provided by colleges must be 600 hours with 100 hours spent on project work or industry based assignment.

NHPC to form joint venture with Orissa for power projects

National Hydroelectric Power Corporation - India (NHPC) to start a joint venture with the Orissa government for setting up power projects in the state, according to media reports.

The NHPC Chairman and Managing Director S K Garg told media that NHPC would sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government of Orissa to set up power projects in the state.

NHPC has expressed its interest over setting up plants and repairing of the plants in the state. However , they have not reached over any financial deal over the same. It is expected that the deal would take place in future.

KIIT in top bracket among varsities

Kalinga Institute of Industrial technology (KIIT) has been ranked fourth amongst the best government and self-financing technical universities in the eastern region, according to media reports.

KIIT ranked 16th best university and fifth among self-financing universities in the country. KIIT achieved ranks for its excellence, infrastructure, placement among 225 universality in a survey conducted by a media organization. KIIT stands fouth best university in the East region.
