Vedanta to start bauxite mining in Orissa

Vedanta Resources Plc said that it is ready to start mining bauxite in the Niyamgiri hill in Orissa. Vedanta wants to dig open-cast mines to feed an alumina refinery it has built in the area as part of an $800 million project.

The hill in Lanjigarh block is inhabited by Dongaria Kondhs, a tribal group. Tribal leaders from the region have been opposing the project, which is said to be a threat for their existence.

The Supreme Court has allowed the company to mine bauxite in the Niyamgiri hills for its plant. The company says that it will show next month that it is complying with court orders so it can begin the project.
