Orissa Cabinet approves Law against attack on Doctors
Breaking News! The Orissa Cabinet has approved a new law to check increasing attacks on doctors and damage to hospitals. The proposed bill on security of doctors will be introduced in the winter session of the Orissa assembly, which will begin on November 26. Once the bill becomes a law, any person or a group of persons attacking a registered medical practitioner or damaging properties in government and private hospitals will be punished.
The quantum of punishment could be three years' imprisonment and Rs. 50,000 fine. The penalty imposed on the attackers would be more than the damage caused to hospitals. The doctors in Orissa have been demanding for a stringent law to deal with frequent attacks on doctors and hospitals.

India as such has many laws. Enactment of further laws is no solution to the problem as the existing criminal laws are sufficient enough for punishment of the offenders on they being found guilty. The real problem with the criminal justice system is that the rate of low convictions. For that an over worked police is one nof the reasons. If the Govt. is really interested for ensuring punishment of the attackers on the doctors instead of enacting more laws, provision for exclusive investigating ofiicer, exclusive public prosecutors and exclusive courts for such offences should be established.
