Lakhs of Devotees throng to Puri ahead of Rath Yatra, Security arrangements tightened
The cultural and religious state Orissa is all set to mark the world famous Rath Yatra tomorrow. Lakhs of devotees have thronged to Puri ahead of the festival. The Rath Yatra is expected to be less crowded this year because of flood conditions in neighbouring West Bengal and North East. West Bengal alone used to send 2-3 lakh devotees to Puri every year.Despite rain and floods in coastal Orissa including Balasore, the devotees are on a high to welcome Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra on the grand road of Puri. The deities venture out of their abode in Puri only once in a year. The festival will last for 9 days and will end with the return of deities from Mausima Temple to Jagannath Temple in Puri during 'Bahuda Yartra'.
The East Coast Railway has decided to run 56 special trains from different parts of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh in order to help devotees reach Puri without any hassles. Special trains will be running from Puri on July 11, 12, and 13 to clear extra rush during the important functions related to Lord Jagannath. In addition to 18 ticket booking counters for unreserved tickets, the East Coast Railway has decided to open new ticket counters at Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Jajpur-Keonjhar Road, Bahdrak and Palasa.
Security has been tightened in and around Puri ahead of Rath Yatra. Sepcial CRPF and OSAP personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order. Sniffer dogs, bomb detection squad and metal detectors will be used at the railway station in Puri. The administration has arranged special team of doctors, nurses, ambulances and other staff to take care of the injured and exhausted people. First Aid and other facilities will be available round-the-clock.
Rath Yatra will be broad casted live on Internet. This facility is coming through the efforts of NIC, Delhi.
