Flood Situation grim in Orissa, State Govt, steps up Relief Operations

Even as the rain stopped completely, flood situation still remained grim in the coastal districts in Orissa, particularly in Balasore, Mayurbhanj and Bhadrak. Millions of people have been stranded, as the villages were cut off from the rest of the state. The state government has stepped up relief operations using Indian Air Force helicopters

The water level have receded in major rivers such as Jalaka, Subarnarekha, Budhabalang and Baitarani. However, thousands of people still wait for food packets and other help. According to the government estimate, at least ten lakh people in 900 villages are affected by the flood. The worst affected areas are Bhograi, Basta, Baliapal and Jaleswar in Balasore district.
